CHAPTER 13

Allegra

According to Piper’s binder, the rehearsal is supposed to be an opportunity for the wedding party, their dates, and immediate family to practice the ceremony before the actual event. They want all hands on deck for a brief run-through to work out any last-minute kinks and tweak accordingly.

Key word: brief.

The agenda in the binder has the rehearsal set at an hour or less, but we are now going on two full hours with no end in sight.

I don’t know who’s worse between the hungover bridesmaids or the rowdy, horny groomsmen guffawing and making side jokes about the shenanigans of last night.

Everyone is laughing up and down the aisle, playing grab-ass, and looking at their phones like this is an adult daycare instead of a formal wedding rehearsal—which is going terribly wrong.

“Okay, let’s do this once more, and try, try, to get it right this time.” Piper drags in a deep breath, closing her eyes for a few seconds as she lets her arms dangle at her sides. Tucking a flyaway strand of sleek ebony hair behind her ear, she slowly exhales, then plasters on her “all is well” smile as if nothing is bothering her.

The show must go on, but I see the fraying edges at the corners of her mouth, the tightness of her forehead, and her rigid stance.

That’s the part that pulls at my heartstrings.

I know what it’s like to put a smiling on your face when you feel like doing anything but.

Damon, fed up like me, and apparently willing to do something about it, pushes to his feet in a storm of fury.

“That’s enough!” He marches to the front of the aisle and starts barking out orders, binder in hand. “Aaron, Mark, Dunk, Colin, and Brian, in that order. You’re here.” His tone is hard and no-nonsense as he shoots them a challenging stare, daring them to keep playing around on his watch. “Look, I know we’re all tired. Some of us are hungover and regretting ill-advised decisions from last night, but I’m not about to sit around and let you all ruin Aaron and Piper’s wedding.”

Damn.

Damon is amazing when he’s sweet and tender, but when he’s taking charge and putting an entire room full of immature adults in their places, he is sexy beyond belief.

I tamp down my urge to swoon as he draws his broad shoulders back, baring his throat to them.

“Thanks, but it’s okay.” Piper sets her hand on Damon’s arm, but he is undeterred in his mission.

“It’s not okay.” He turns to face the guys, who are still snickering. “You think it’s funny for her to stand here and watch her dream wedding go down the tubes? We’re hoping the weather lets up, but if it doesn’t, she and Aaron are going to need your help to make sure tomorrow is special. They’re going to need you to remind them why they chose you to help them celebrate…” He trails off, staring each person down. He’s letting them know in no uncertain terms that their behavior makes him question why they were chosen.
